Celebrating young fashion designers

  • Taking place during New Zealand fashion week, Walk the Line gives young NZ designers the chance to showcase their designs on the runway of fashion week. It’s a unique youth event delivered by YMCA’s youth development programme. Every year the visual theme of the show represents an idea or issue relating to youth. 2019’s theme was inspired by the Maori philosophy of wellness “Whare Tapa Wha”. This refers to wellness being a four-pillar concept, that represents the four walls of a whare (meeting house). They are Mental, Spiritual, Physical, and Family health. Walk the line needed an event brand that could speak to these deep themes while remaining grounded in the youth space.

  • The creative combines iconography and colour to bring this philosophy to life. Strands of colour form the pillars of health - the execution reflect the aesthetic found in tukutuku panels that line the walls of a meeting house. While the female, with eyes looking to the sky, celebrates the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of the youth entering the show. A modern, clean typeface and bright colour palette were used to present creativity and diversity. Connecting these elements results in creative that celebrates the show’s theme, creativity, and diversity of the garments on display.
